What the client wanted

Frensham Heights School were pushing forward with an ambitious green agenda.  Prescient Power had previously provided a wide-ranging consultancy study to look at energy reduction and based on the advice this gave, they wanted to install a 30kW solar PV system on their sports hall roof.

The electricity would feed the sports hall and neighbouring buildings, adding to the overall reduction in fossil fuel use.

The challenges

There were two particular difficulties:

Most notably the sports hall roof was a very unusual legacy construction from the 1970s. This caused considerable angst as we went to and fro with our structural engineer to ensure the system would have zero impact on the design life of the roof, and of course, not safety implications.

Secondly, the position of the building made access and scaffolding quite difficult, meaning detailed design was only possible once a full scaffold had been erected.

The end result

The final 30kW array comprised Solar Edge inverters allowing constant monitoring of the system to module level.

Outputs are higher than expected and we continue to maintain and monitor the array.
