What the client wanted

Lamport Hall is famous for its gardens and runs gardening courses, as well as providing a venue for weddings and also accepting visitors over the Summer months.  The hall contains many important antiques, artwork and tapestries,as well as an extensive library collection. The hall is also home to many staff who live within the residential wings.

The previous oil heating system was used sparingly, due to the high operating costs, causing concern to our client who wanted to make sure that the important artifacts within the building were preserved to the highest standard, as well as providing comfortable living and working arrangements for staff.

Our client runs a charitable trust from this beautiful Grade I listed hall in Northamptonshire.  The hall had 4 main goals in mind when looking at renewable energy, to:

  • reduce the hall’s carbon footprint
  • provide a more conducive environment for preserving the fabric of the hall
  • reduce running costs
  • provide comfortable temperatures for the living and working environment

The challenges

Following comprehensive consultation and design work our client opted for an HDG wood pellet boiler offering ease of use, low maintenance and a clean and efficient burn.

To prevent disruption to the fabric of the building, the boiler was housed in an outbuilding, which was repaired in order to safely house the boiler and ensure that the wood pellets could be stored in a clean and dry environment.  The boiler had no impact on the building itself, with the existing central heating system maintained and fitted to the modern pipework using a plate heat exchanger.

Even the flue was powder coated to a terracotta colour to blend with the traditional chimneys around the estate.

The end result

On Prescient Power’s work on site, the Director of the Estate said:

“This was a large project for us to entrust to a business, we needed a company who understood the delicate nature of working within listed buildings, who would ensure that the gardens and the grounds were not impacted in any way, and who would provide a first rate installation that was simple and easy to use and solved our problem heating bill.  Prescient Power did all of this and much more.  The installers, designers and engineers worked tirelessly to deliver a system that met all of our requirements, whilst working closely with our team.  They found a way around all of the perculiarities of our estate and engineered innovative and often bespoke solutions.  They are not your ‘run of the mill’ boiler engineers, they are educated and courteous, and took extremely good care of the estate whilst it was under their care.”
